What is it like to be a woman in the academy?

24 Feb

Hi everyone. I know, I know, long hiatus. Again.

Well, we think we have a plan to fix our inconsistent, unpredictable post frequency/volume, and one that isn’t entirely dependent on the WITA team. The Tell Your Story page is finally actually live.

We thought it was before, but it turned out that submissions weren’t actually going anywhere. (If you tried to send anything in, we’re really, really sorry.) Now, they go to our Gmail account, unmwita@gmail.com. Of course you can always just contact us there, but the virtue of Tell Your Story is that you don’t have to put in an email address, and can therefore remain anonymous, even to us.

When we receive submissions, we’ll post them (with some delay) as blog entries here, and tag them with the Category “stories,” so as we get more and more of them you can filter them from the rest of the blog’s post stream.

If you want to write but you’re not sure what, you can check out the blog that largely inspired (provoked?) me to establish WITA in the first place, What Is It Like to Be a Woman in Philosophy?, and its less depressing sister blog, What We’re Doing About What It’s Like. But your stories don’t have to be anything like the entries there, either. We’ll be publishing a poem soon, as it happens.

Though WITA was founded at UNM, we’ll happily take stories from anywhere else. (I may poke colleagues from my New England alma mater.) And from any field/discipline, I hope it goes without saying.

What is it like to be a woman in the academy? And whenever the answer to that can be boiled down to “Not Good Enough,” what can we do about it? Let us — and each other — know what you think.
